Canisius College 2, Rider University 0
BUFFALO, NY—In the regular season finale the Broncs lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at Canisius Wednesday afternoon. “We missed too many chances to deserve to win today,” said Rider head coach Drayson Hounsome.
Rider (9-6-1, 6-3-1 MAAC) will now host a MAAC playoff game Saturday, October 31. The Broncs are undefeated (6-0) and unscored upon at home this year.
The defending MAAC Champion, Rider finished in a tie for third place and will be the fourth seed. Rider will host the fifth seed, Niagara, Saturday evening at 7pm. “Basically we have to do what we did last year,” Hounsome said of the 2014 Broncs, who finished fourth and won three playoff games for their first MAAC Title.
On Wednesday, Rider out-shot Canisius 17-10. “We had enough chances,” Hounsome said. “We decided to hit the ball at the goalkeeper instead of putting it in the back of the net. We had plenty of chances.”
Rider junior Bethany-May Howard (Glastonbury, England/Bridgwater College) made four saves. Howard ranks eighth in the nation in save percentage and 17th in saves per game.
Canisius (6-11-2, 4-6 MAAC) took a 1-0 lead in the 64th minute of play and scored again with just six minutes left to play. “We lost focus in a five minute spell, made errors and they scored a soft goal,” Hounsome said. “When we were pressing up they scored again.”
The Broncs defeated Canisius 5-0 at Rider last season. The last time Rider traveled to Buffalo the Broncs lost 2-1 in 2013. Canisius holds a slight 11-9-1 advantage in the series.
On Saturday Rider will host Niagara. When Niagara came to Rider this year the Broncs won 1-0.
