RIVERDALE, NJ— In a match-up between two of the top goalkeepers, not only in the MAAC but in the country, this was a predictable result.
The Broncs and Jaspers played to a scoreless tie Saturday afternoon in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game. “One point (in MAAC standings for a tie) is not the end of the world but it is disappointing not to win,” said Rider head coach Drayson Hounsome.
Rider (8-5-1, 5-2-1 MAAC) is now 7-2-1 in its last 10 games.
It was the eighth shutout of the season for Rider. Junior goalkeeper Bethany-May Howard (Glastonbury, England/Bridgwater College) made seven saves but did not get credit for the shutout, since she was unable to play the final five minutes due to a bloody nose.
Rider freshman goalkeeper Amy Kozlowski (Middletown, CT/Middletown) played the final five minutes in her first game action of the season. “That was a tough situation for Amy to come into having never played a college minute against one of the top teams in the conference and she did well,” Hounsome said. “She did everything she needed to do.”
Manhattan (9-3-2, 5-0-2 MAAC) came into the game having allowed just six goals all year, best in the MAAC.
Jasper goalkeeper Kristen Skonieczny, who ranks in the top five in the nation in save percentage and goals against average, made two saves.
Howard ranks first in the MAAC in saves and 15th in the nation in save percentage. Howard is second in the MAAC in goals against average to Skonieczny.
Manhattan out-shot Rider 18-10, including 7-2 in shots on goal.
Rider leads the all-time series with Manhattan 8-7-4. The Jaspers have not defeated Rider since the 2009 MAAC playoffs. “This is the worst result we've had here in six years,” Hounsome said. “We've beaten them every year so even though they are ahead of us in the standings it feels like we lost two points today instead of gaining one.”
Rider is home for the final time in the regular season October 24, hosting Fairfield at 1pm. “We have a week to recover,” Hounsome said. “With all of the injuries we've had we've been waiting for this week for a while.”
