HAMPTON, VA—The Rider Broncs, ranked 10th in the nation by InterMat, are currently competing in the 35th Virginia Duals, held at the Hampton Coliseum. “We didn't finish matches well today,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor. “We wrestled pretty well and we had a lot of leads that got away.”
The Broncs went 1-2 on Friday, defeating The Citadel before losing to Virginia and Arizona State. “It is good competition,” Taylor said, “and we saw some good things.”
On Friday, Rider freshman Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) won all three times. His win in The Citadel match against the 12th ranked wrestler in the nation gave Rider a 10-6 lead and his win against Virginia gave Rider a 9-6 lead.
“Chad beat the kid from Citadel who is ranked high,” Taylor said.
Walsh improved to 18-5 on the season, 8-2 in duals. “Chad and Chuck each had a pretty good day,” Taylor said.
Senior Chuck Zeisloft (Woodbury Heights, NJ/Gateway) won all three of his matches. Against Virginia he cut the UVa lead to 6-3.
Junior Greg Velasco (Union Beach, NJ/Keyport) won twice before winning by forfeit.
Senior Clint Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) won twice, including a major decision against The Citadel.
Junior Rob Deutsch (Cherry Hill, NJ/Eastern Regional) went 2-1.His major decision gave Rider the lead for good against The Citadel and his major decision gave Rider a 4-3 lead over Arizona State.
Junior Curt Delia (Mullica Hill, NJ/Delsea) saw his first action of the season and won by tech fall in the first period against The Citadel. “Curt was winning solid in the Arizona State match and got pinned,” Taylor said.
Delia went 1-2 on the day.
Freshman B.J. Clagon (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) went 1-2. In the dual meet with Virginia, Clagon won to tie the score at 6-6.
Sophomore Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, Del./Caravel Academy) went 1-2 with a major decision vs. Citadel. Against Arizona State Wolfe was winning by four points in the third period before being pinned. “These are the things that can come back to haunt you,” Taylor said.
Last year Rider won three of five duals at the Va Duals and placed sixth.
Competition continues Saturday when Rider faces Bucknell. “Bucknell has a good team,” Taylor said. They beat Virginia this year.”
