LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—The Broncs lost to Temple Friday night on Ben Cohen Field. “Temple is a good team,” said Rider head coach Drayson Hounsome. “They are well organized and well coached.”
Temple (4-0) broke a scoreless tie with a long goal 5:31 into the second half, and came back three minutes later and scored on a chip shot over the head of Rider sophomore goalkeeper Bethany-May Howard (Glastonbury, England/Bridgwater College).
“We played really well for 55 minutes,” Hounsome said. “We controlled the game, had more shots and looked more dangerous. They scored a fluky goal from distance and that changed the momentum. We didn't respond quickly enough to that goal.”
The Owls, who have not allowed a goal yet this season, scored with 1:58 remaining for the final score.
“I was pleased with our ball possession tonight,” Hounsome said, finding a silver lining. “We moved the ball well and created chances. We were really dangerous against an undefeated team that has not allowed a goal this year.”
Rider (2-2) out-shot Temple14-9, including 6-1 in the first half. “We had plenty of chances,” Hounsome said. “We broke them down; we just didn't take advantage of the opportunities.”
Howard made four saves for the Broncs.
Rider had three corner kicks to Temple's two. “We need to do a better job of finishing our chances,” Hounsome said.
Rider defeated Temple 1-0 last year.
Rider leads the all-time series 3-1.
Rider travels to Wagner Sunday for a 1pm game. “Wagner did not play tonight like we did so that is worth a goal right there,” Hounsome said. “It is going to be tough. We need to see if we can respond and play fatigued and see how we perform.”
