Soroko, Men's and Women's Teams Honored for Academics
NEW ORLEANS-The United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association has announced the 2012 Division I All-Academic Track & Field teams and both the Rider men's and women's teams were honored. Individually, Rider graduate student Mike Soroko was also honored.
Soroko (Kinnelon, NJ) was one of 431 student-athletes in the nation to be named USTFCCCA All-Academic.
The Rider women's team compiled a 3.46 grade point average, the 10th best among the 300+ Division I teams.
"The women have continued to raise the bar of academic excellence and athletics at Rider," said Rider head coach Bob Hamer. "They are a group of committed and dedicated women in the classroom and at the track and it is very rewarding to see them honored in this manner."
The Rider men's team compiled a 3.08 grade point average.
For Soroko to qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team he needed a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or better and have participated in the NCAA Division I Championships. Majoring in Business Administration, Soroko owns a 3.82 grade point average.
"Mike consistently has been leading the way in the classroom and the track," Hamer said. "He is very deserving of this honor and he has been a great representative of the program and more importantly the University."
This season Soroko earned All-East honors and competed in the NCAA Regional, and earned Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference All-Academic team honors for the ninth time.
Soroko was the MAAC Champion in the 3,000m steeplechase and anchored the Distance Medley Relay to a Rider record.
