3 Broncs Honored by MAAC
Murphy Pitcher of Year
TROY, NY-Mike Murphy of the Rider University baseball team was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year, and joins teammates Brandon Cotten and Ian Lindsay on the First Team All-MAAC Baseball Team.
Murphy, a sophomore from Hamilton (Peddie), was 5-1 against MAAC teams this year, the best winning percentage in the conference. He ranks second in the MAAC in earned run average at 2.86 and compiled an overall record of 6-4 in 13 starts.
Also a First Team All-NJ pitcher this year, Murphy is the second Bronc in three years to be named MAAC Pitcher of the Year (Mike Thomas as a junior in 2010).
Cotten, a senior centerfielder from Wiconisco, Pa. (Williams Valley) earns First Team honors for the second year in a row. Also a First Team All-NJ selection, Cotten leads Rider in hits (60), RBI (30), slugging percentage (.454) and stolen bases (16 of 18) and is regarded as one of the finest defensive outfielders in the East.
Lindsay, a junior designated hitter from Oaklyn (Haddon Twp.), leads Rider with a .342 batting average. Also a First Team All-NJ selection, Lindsay batted .375 against MAAC pitchers this year with 27 hits in 19 MAAC starts.
Named to the MAAC All-Academic team were senior Chris Pierfy (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham), junior Tyler Smith (Westmont/Haddon Twp.), red-shirt freshman Mike Campbell (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) and sophomore Kyle Kennett (Spring Lake, NJ/St. Rose).
Pierfy compiled a 3.32 grade point average as a Management & Leadership major. Smith owns a 3.43 grade point average majoring in Business Administration. Campbell is a Psychology major with a 3.32 grade point average and Kennett has a 3.60 grade point average as a Secondary Education/Psychology major.
Rider is the fourth seed in the MAAC Championship tournament, which begins Thursday at 3pm when the Broncs play the defending champion and top seed, Manhattan.
