Rider at Terrier Invitational
Riley, Giovagnoli, Elgin Set Rider Records
BOSTON, MA-The Broncs are competing at the Terrier Invitational Friday and Saturday, hosted by Boston University. The Rider women competed Friday and the men will compete Saturday.
"We had a great day," said Rider head coach Bob Hamer. "We came here with the goal of testing our limits and we set some school records."
For the Broncs, junior Mia Riley (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) placed seventh of 150 in the 200m with a Rider-record time of 25.26 and was eighth in the 60m dash (7.94). "Mia had a great day," Hamer said. "She had a tremendous 200. She really stepped up and is close to reaching the next level."
Junior Ashley Hunter (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) placed 10th of 35 in the 500m (1:18.79), sophomore Lauryn Strebeck (Dayton, OH/South Brunswick) placed 15th of 38 in the long jump with an ECAC qualifying distance of 15'11.5", freshman Sydney Grimes (West Orange, NJ) placed 15th of 51 in the shot put (39'4.5") and senior Heather Giovagnoli (Royersford, Pa./Spring Ford) placed 18th of 115 in the mile with a Rider-record time of 5:00.07.
Junior Jordyn Horning (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) placed 22nd of 87 in the 400m (59.11), freshman Leonora Paul (Hackensack, NJ) placed 22nd of 51 in the shot put (36'11"), sophomore Rhea Phipps (Basking Ridge/Ridge) placed 23rd in the shot put with an ECAC qualifying distance of 36'10.25" and junior Megan Elgin (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) placed 24th of 83 in the 3,000m with an ECAC qualifying time of 9:58.56, setting a new Rider record.
Junior Erin Fitzgibbons (Sayreville) placed 35th of 72 in the 5,000m (18:06.65).
Junior Lauren Findley (Hallstead, Pa./Blue Ridge) placed 39th of 80 in the 800m (2:22.83), junior Jillian Shutt (Lawrenceville, Pa./Williamson) placed 41st of 115 in the mile (5:11.91), junior Nicole Tassello (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) placed 52nd in the 5,000m (18:35.25), senior Kelli Kaelin (Little Egg Harbor/Pinelands Regional) placed 58th in the 5,000m (18:44.40) and freshman Emily Ritter (Millsboro, DE/Sussex Tech) placed 58th in the 3,000m (10:39.94).
The Rider 4 x 400 relay team of Horning, Findley, Hunter and Riley placed seventh of 30 in 3:58.67. "Mia anchored it and ran a great leg," Hamer said.
"We wanted to make a statement today and I think we did," Hamer said. "That we are still here and we're going to be a force to be reckoned with in the MAAC this winter."
The Rider men compete at the Terrier Invitational on Saturday.
