Rider at George Washington Invitational
Broncs 7th of 9
BETHANY BEACH, Del.--The Rider University golf team competed at the George Washington Invitational this weekend, placing seventh of nine teams in the two-day event Friday and Saturday.
Rider opened the first two rounds of the 54 hole tournament at the Bear Trap Dunes Golf Club in Delaware with a 656 (333-323) and finished with 319 for a 54 hole total of 975.
"We showed signs of improvement over yesterday," said head coach Bob Whartenby. "We were still a little rusty but we will keep improving as the weather keeps improving."
For the Broncs freshman James Buttermark (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) had a three round total of 237 after a 79 on Saturday to tie for 25th out of 51 golfers. Buttermark shot 81 and 77 on the par-72, 6,834-yard course Friday.
Also for Rider, senior Brian Accorsini (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) shot a final round 77 to score 240 over the two days after rounds of 81 and 82 on Friday to finish 30th.
Senior Jordan Wycoff (Fort Washington, Pa./Saint Stephen's Episcopal) placed 38th after a 79 on Saturday. Wycoff opened with rounds of 90 and 81 for a three-round score of 241.
Senior Brent Wolgast (Bay City, Mich./Pendleton) was 39th with a total of 251 (81-83-87) with junior Chris Wolak (Issaquah, Wash./Hopkinton) finishing tied for 46th (262 total) after rounds of 92, 85, 85.
Pennsylvania won the tournament with an 880, five shots better than host George Washington and Yale (885). Holy Cross was fourth (915), Monmouth was fifth (917), Yale 'B' was sixth (960), followed by Rider, St. Francis (NY) (1009) and Hofstra (1035).
The Broncs placed eighth of 16 teams at this tournament in the spring of 2010.
Rider competes at the Wildcat Invitational in Malvern, Pennsylvania April 3-4.
