Rider at TCNJ Lions Invitational
EWING-The Broncs competed at the Lions Invitational at TCNJ Saturday. "Today went really well," said Rider head coach Bob Hamer. "We had a lot of great performances. The team came with the right attitude and really went out there and competed to the best of their ability."
For the Rider women, freshman Caitlin Vanek (Riegelsville, PA/Wilson) won the triple jump (11.31m). "Caitlin struggled a bit this year but the last couple of weeks you could see she was making progress," Hamer said. "She really worked hard this week to correct some of her mistakes."
Freshman Ashley Hunter (Northampton, Pa.) won the 400m hurdles (1:03.77) and placed second in the 100m hurdles (15.31). "Ashley has had a tremendous year," Hamer said. "She had 'PRs' in both hurdles this weekend and is making a lot of progress."
Junior Chelsea Callan (Hazlet/Raritan) won the 1500m (4:46.40) and senior Alicia Price (Voorhees/Eastern) won the shot put (12.93m) and placed fourth in the discus (37.38m).
"We had some wins and an IC4A qualifier," Hamer said.
For the Rider men freshman Greg Wesh (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) won the 800m in an IC4A qualifying time of 1:51.65.
Also for the Rider women freshman Mia Riley (West Caldwell/James Caldwell) placed second in the 100m (12.40) and fifth in the 200m (26.13), senior Jennifer Alksmant (Forked River/Lacey Township) placed second in the discus (39.51m) and freshman Jillian Shutt placed third in the 3000m steeplechase (11:56.31).
Junior Shaylah Counts (Newark/Malcolm Shabazz) placed sixth in the 100m (12.72m) and seventh in the 200m (26.36) and junior Johanna Clarke (Laurelton, N.Y./Mary Louis Academy) placed sixth in the 800m (2:21.20).
Also for the Rider men senior Brandon Wolf (Lititz, PA/Warwick) placed fourth in the hammer (52.12m), sophomore Adam Haun (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) placed fourth in the triple jump (13.07m), junior Brian Leggett (Old Chatham, NY/Chatham) placed fifth in the pole vault (4.25m), freshman James Burroughs (West Orange) was fifth in both the 400m hurdles (54.90) and in the 110m hurdles (15.13), freshman John Hill (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) placed fifth in the 3,000m steeplechase (10:18.30), freshman Sean McCullough (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./La Salle) placed sixth in the 1500m (4:09.42)
Also for the women freshman Erin McMullin (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) placed fourth in the 200m (25.95) and eighth in the 100m (12.81).
Rider hosts the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships May 1-2. "Next weekend is going to be tough," Hamer said. "Manhattan is loaded. We think we have a great chance to take a stab at it. The team is really focused. We feel really good about the direction of the program."
