Rider at IC4A/ECAC Championships
Gonzalez All-East in the Mile / Soroko All-East in the 3000 meter
BOSTON, Mass.--The Rider men's indoor track and field team competed this weekend at the 89th annual IC4A Championships at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center with the women's team competing at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Boston University.
For the Rider men at IC4As, junior Christian Gonzalez (Somerset/Franklin Twp.) was sixth in the finals of the mile with a time of 4:11.05 to earn All-East honors. Gonzalez set a Rider record on Saturday in the mile trials with a time of 4:06.44.
"I'm happy for Chris," said head coach Bob Hamer. "I'm proud of his effort. Our goal was for him to come in and attempt to make the finals which would put him in position for All-East honors and he did not disappoint. He ran a great race and learned some of the more tactical aspects having to battle through from the second pack to get sixth. This experience will help him down the road."
On Saturday, junior Michael Soroko (Kinnelon) earned All-East honors with a win in the 3,000 meter (8:13.42).
"This was an exciting weekend," Hamer added. Chris and Mike emerged to that level and we have some of the younger athletes who gained valuable experience this weekend. This was great exposure for the team and on the men's side, a trail blazing thing for the program. I'm excited for the future."
On Sunday for the Rider women at ECACs, senior Alicia Price (Voorhees/Eastern) threw 15.91m in the weight throw.
Also for the Bronc men, freshman Jorge Merino (Old Bridge) threw 14.17m in the shot put.
Rider opens the 2010 outdoor schedule at the Lafayette 5-Way meet in Easton, Pa., on March 27.
