Rider-Lafayette Winter Games
NEW YORK, NY-The Broncs competed at the 168th Street Armory Friday night in the Rider-Lafayette Winter Games. "When you run a meet you don't get to see everything you'd like to but from what I did see we had a lot of really great things," said Rider head coach Bob Hamer.
For the Rider women, senior Kelsey Kohler (Southampton, PA/Saint Basil Academy) broke a Rider record and placed fifth in the 3,000m (10:24.17), a record that stood since 2002.
For the Rider men, junior Michael Soroko (Kinnelon) won the mile in an IC4A qualifying time of 4:10.65. "Mike is a tremendous kid who has worked really hard to get where he is at," Hamer said. "He buys into everything we ask him to do to become good and he is really seeing the pay off of that right now. He is the epitome of what it takes, the sacrifices, to become a good distance runner. He is the most improved athlete I've ever coached."
Also for the Rider women, senior Alicia Price (Voorhees/Eastern) placed second in the shot put (13.34m), junior Chelsea Callan (Hazlet/Raritan) placed third in the mile (5:05.05), freshman Erin McMullin (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) placed fifth in the 200m (25.99), sophomore Heather Giovagnoli (Royersford, Pa./Spring Ford) placed fifth in the 800m (2:19.10), freshman Mia Riley (West Caldwell/James Caldwell) placed eighth in the 60m dash (8.00), freshman Ashley Hunter (Northampton, Pa.) placed 10th in the 400m (1:00.05) and freshman Lauren Findley (Hallstead, Pa./Blue Ridge) placed 10th in the 500m (1:20.55).
For the Rider men junior Christian Gonzalez (Somerset/Franklin Twp.) placed second in the 3,000m (8:28.48), freshman Daequan Kim (Bordentown) placed third in the 200m (22.13), freshman David Hightower (Easton, Pa.) placed third in the 60m hurdles (8.30), junior John Clark (Pennsville) placed fifth in the wt. throw (16.39m) and sophomore David South (Sergeantsville (Hunterdon Central) was ninth in the 800m (1:56.44).
The Broncs return to the Armory February 19 for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships. "This was a really good tune up for next week," Hamer said. "We're hopeful we can carry this performance into a great performance at the MAAC Championships next Friday."
