NJIT 2, Rider University 0
NEWARK-The Broncs lost at New Jersey Institute of Technology Sunday afternoon. "NJIT is a tough team for us to play because of their style of play," said Rider head coach Drayson Hounsome. "We really couldn't really control of the ball."
The Highlanders (2-3) broke a scoreless tie 10 minutes into the second half and scored again just five minutes later. "We basically gave them two goals," Hounsome said, "It is as simple as that."
NJIT out-shot the Broncs (3-4) 12-6, including 6-2 in the second half. "It was one of those games where you have to grind it out," Hounsome said, "and whoever made the least amount of mistakes was going to win."
Rider junior goalkeeper Alex Post (Chalfont, Pa. /Central Bucks West) made five saves.
"With their style of play it was tough for us to play our game," Hounsome said. "They don't pass as much as they try to go very direct. They pressure you a lot so you don't have much time on the ball, and they try to capitalize on your mistakes, so it was tough for anyone to look good. (Freshman) Kate Stevens (Deddington, England/Chenderit) played well in the back for us and (senior) Leslie (Amster of Somerville, N.J./Raritan Valley CC/Somerville) came in off the bench and did well."
This was the first-ever meeting between Rider and NJIT in women's soccer. "NJIT is much improved," Hounsome said. "They beat Drexel this year and today they took advantage of our mistakes."
Rider plays at St. Francis-PA September 18. "St. Francis is going to be a tough game," Hounsome said. "We need to bounce back and eliminate our mistakes."
