ANNAPOLIS, MD-The Broncs lost to FDU Sunday in the second round of the 10th annual Navy Soccer Invitational, hosted by the U. S. Naval Academy. "It is very disappointing because it was a winnable game," said Rider head coach Drayson Hounsome. "We performed well in the first half, making corrections from our game on Friday, but then they scored three goals on us."
Rider freshmen Angela Monaco (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem) and Meghan Mohr (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem) were named to the all-tournament team. "They both pretty much played every minute of the tournament," Hounsome said. "For two freshmen to come in and play that amount, they had a solid weekend."
FDU broke a 0-0 tie 5:25 into the second half on an 18-yard blast by Rashidah Sherman and the Knights made it 2-0 on a goal by Jennifer Arceneaux five minutes later. "They were able to break us down in the second half," Hounsome said.
The Knights (1-1) made it 3-0 with eight minutes left in the game on a goal by Emma Howes.
Rider (0-2) out-shot FDU 6-3 in the first half but was out-shot 11-10 for the game. "The first half we played great," Hounsome said. "We controlled the first 30 minutes, won all the balls, kept possession, created opportunities and we controlled the play. All of the play was in their end."
Junior Kimberly Reichel (Chester, N.J./Mendham), freshman Claire Thompson (East Greenwich, R.I./E. Greenwich) and freshman Demi Mello (Mattituck, N.Y./Mattituck) each had two of Rider's 10 shots.
Rider junior goalkeeper Alex Post (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West) made four saves.
Rider defeated FDU 2-0 last year in Teaneck. On Friday FDU lost to host Navy 6-0.
Rider plays the home opener Tuesday, September 1, at 2:00pm against Delaware State. "On Tuesday we'll have to correct the mistakes we made this weekend," Hounsome said.
