Charlotte 22, Rider University 1
CHARLOTTE, NC?The Broncs lost at the two-time defending Atlantic 10 champion University of North Carolina Charlotte Friday. “We did not do anything (positive) today,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis, “With bad weather rolling in we were fortunate to get this game in, but not in how we played.”
Charlotte (9-3) scored three in the first inning on a three-run home run, four runs in the third inning on five hits, and five more in the fourth inning to break the game open. “It was a 3-1 game and then we couldn't get them out,” Davis said.
Five Rider (3-5) pitchers walked 15 Charlotte batters while giving up 18 hits. “Nobody is going to win a game with 15 walks,” Davis said. “That was the key to the game, You just don't walk that many and win.”
Junior Eric Woodrow (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West), sophomore John Ralston (Annandale, Va./Paul VI), junior Matt McCollum (Tabernacle, N.J./Shawnee) and freshman Austin Straub (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) collected hits for the Broncs.
Charlotte is now 9-0 at home this year and was 26-7 at home last year. “They play great defense and they make you beat them,” Davis said of the 49ers.
The Broncs play Charlotte Saturday at 1pm. senior Jimmer Kennedy (Levittown, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) will start for Rider. Kennedy has 18 career wins, ninth highest ever at Rider.
