College Wrestling
Old Dominion University 28, Rider University 15
LAWRENCEVILLE?The Broncs won four of the nine bouts in a Colonial Athletic Association loss to nationally ranked Old Dominion Saturday afternoon. “There was a lot of good battling out there today,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor. “ODU has a good, balanced team with a good wrestler at every weight.”
For Rider (6-7, 3-2 CAA), senior Jason Lapham (West Chazy, NY/Beekmantown), ranked 29th in the nation and third in the CAA, won by fall. “Jason took advantage of the situation and did exactly what you would want a senior to do,” Taylor said.
Junior Michael Kessler (Randallstown, MD/Owings Mills), ranked 25th in the nation and second in the CAA, defeated the fourth ranked 157 in the CAA to get Rider on the board. “This was the third time I wrestled him,” Kessler said. “He beat me my sophomore year and earlier this year I beat him at the Virginia Duals. I felt good to avenge that loss again.”
“Mike had a good win against a good wrestler,” Taylor said. “Mike is seeming to round the corner. He's always been good but now he understands to get even better coming into the conference tournament.”
Kessler took the mat with Rider trailing 19-0. “Coach told us in situations like this, to go out like it is a tournament, and wrestle in that frame of mind, and that helps,” Kessler said. “I used that today.”
Senior Doug Umbehauer (Shamong, NJ/Lenape), ranked fifth in the nation and second in the CAA, won to cut the lead to 25-12.
Junior Ed Bordas (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central), ranked 31st in the nation and first in the CAA, defeated the second ranked heavyweight in the CAA for the final score. “Eddie is getting into a really good groove right now,” Taylor said, “in terms of confidence and competing hard. He's making some great adjustments.”
For 18th ranked ODU (15-6, 5-0 CAA), James Nicholson, ranked sixth in the nation, won by fall to give the Monarchs a 6-0 lead, and seventh ranked Ryan Williams won by fall at 141 for a 15-0 lead. “They've got three very good lightweights that help start their matches off real well,” Taylor said. “That's a tough way for us to start.”
The Broncs host Boston University in a CAA dual February 20. “I think we're heading in the right direction,” Taylor said.
