LAWRENCEVILLE—The Broncs lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game to Siena Friday afternoon.
Siena (10-2, 4-1 MAAC) scored mid-way through the first half on a goal off of a rebound and made it 2-0 nine minutes later on a header. “We gave them a two goal head start, which is never a good thing, especially against a team like Siena,” said Rider head coach Drayson Hounsome. “We had quite a mountain to climb after that.”
Rider junior Kara Perkoski (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall), who has played every minute of every game so far this season, suffered an elbow injury in the fourth minute of play and did not return. “Losing Kara in the first few minutes hurt us,” Hounsome said. “She is one of our stalwarts in the back.”
Taking Perkoski's place was freshman Kaitlin Wylie (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury), who has been playing forward for the Broncs. “We got Wylie in there and she really stepped up her game," Hounsome said. "We knew she could play there and her play today was a pleasant surprise. Kara sprained her elbow but nothing was broken.”
The Saints made it 3-0 with 15 minutes left in the game.
Siena out-shot Rider (4-8-1, 0-4 MAAC) 13-8. Rider out-shot Siena 4-3 in the second half. “We did better in the second half,” Hounsome said.
Rider junior goalkeeper Alex Post (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West) made one save.
Rider and Siena have now met 14 times since the series began in 1997 with Rider winning five, the last win coming in 2006. The teams tied in 2007 and Siena also won 3-0 last year.
Rider hosts Marist in a MAAC contest Sunday at 2pm. “We put ourselves in a position now where we have to win on Sunday,” Hounsome said, “to stay out of the bottom four in the MAAC.”
All ten teams travel to Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Florida for the MAAC Championship, and the bottom four teams have to play an extra game.
