NEW ROCHELLE, NY—Despite out-shooting
the Gaels and controlling most of the play Rider lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic
Conference game at Iona Sunday. “We played a
great game in difficult conditions,” said Rider head coach Drayson Hounsome,
“but if you play well and you're the better team it doesn't necessarily mean
you win in soccer.”
Rider
(5-10-1, 1-6 MAAC) out-shot Iona 11-7. Rider
had nine shots on goal compared to just three by Iona and Rider had two corner
kicks to Iona's one. “We had a game plan and
followed it and we really executed well,” Hounsome said.
Iona (7-10-1, 4-3 MAAC) scored the only goal of the game with 30
minutes left in the second half following a free kick. “It is disappointing to
out-play a team and not come away with the win,” Hounsome said. “We've given up
a few goals lately on set pieces that we have to eliminate.”
Rider junior goalkeeper Alex Post (Chalfont, Pa./Central
Bucks West) made two saves.
Junior Lauren Musumeci (Annandale, N.J./North Hunterdon) had three of
Rider's 11 shots, all on goal.
Gael
goalkeeper Suzanne Baldissard made eight saves for Iona.
“She made one outstanding save on a good run we had,” Hounsome said.
Last year
the Broncs also lost 1-0 to Iona at
Rider. The two teams have now met 13
times since the series began in 1997 with Rider winning seven and there was one
tie. Rider last defeated Iona in 2006.
“I thought (freshman) Demi Mello (Mattituck,
N.Y./Mattituck) played very well in a 4-3-3, which we haven't played in a
while,” Hounsome said. “She had a solid
game as did (freshman) Kaitlin Wylie (Yardley,
Pa./Pennsbury) on defense.
Everyone played well. It was a solid performance by the entire team.”
The Broncs
return home to host Manhattan
Friday. “We're 4-1 at home so we're definitely confident at home,' Hounsome
said. “We have to perform the way we did today but not give up that one goal
that hurt us.”
