HAMPTON, VA?The Broncs defeated North Dakota State after losing to the fourth seed, 15th ranked Edinboro, on the first day of the 29th Annual Virginia Duals Wrestling Tournament, held at the Hampton Coliseum Friday and Saturday. “The kids are really wrestling hard down here,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor. “They have responded very well.”
The Broncs will now take on the loser of the #6 Old Dominion vs. #3 Central Michigan match Saturday morning.
For Rider (2-3) senior Jason Lapham (West Chazy, NY/Beekmantown) defeated the seventh ranked 165 pound wrestler in the nation to get the Broncs on the scoreboard against Edinboro, and came back to win again against N. Dakota St. “Jason had a huge win against Edinboro,” Taylor said. “That's what he's capable of, and he followed it up with another good win.”
Senior Doug Umbehauer (Shamong, NJ/Lenape), ranked fifth in the nation, defeated the 12th ranked wrestler at 184 from Edinboro and won a major decision against N. Dakota St. “He needs to get better every match and it looks like that is what's happening,” Taylor said.
Freshman Filiberto Colon (Belleville) won by fall, his third pin of the season, against N. Dakota St. after losing the opening match against Edinboro to the second ranked 125 in the nation. Colon, a member of the CAA Preseason All-Freshman team, set the New Jersey High School record for career pins with 112.
Freshman Jimmy Kirchner (Somerville) won by fall against N. Dakota St. “Filiberto and Kirchner got us off to a great start with a pair of pins,' Taylor said. “Those were both close matches when they got the pin.”
Junior Michael Kessler (Randallstown, MD/Owings Mills), ranked 17th in the nation, won by major decision to give Rider a 16-7 lead over N. Dakota St. after losing 7-2 to the number one ranked 157 pounder in the nation from Edinboro. “Mike looked pretty good against a wrestler who is ranked number one for a reason,' Taylor said. “He took him down once and gave him a good match. I was pleased with the way he wrestled him.”
Junior captain Ed Bordas (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central) won by fall against N. Dakota State for the final score, his third pin of the season.
Junior Michael Miller (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) won by a major decision against Edinboro in just his second bout of the season.
Junior Mike Ward (Mayfield, Ohio/Mayfield Village) and freshman Tyler Smith (Phillipsburg, N.J./Belvidere) also won against N. Dakota St.
