CLARION,
PA?The Broncs won six of 10 bouts in a come-from-behind win at Clarion Saturday
afternoon. “Clarion has a pretty good team,” said Rider head coach Gary
Taylor. “It showed a lot of character to
come back like this. The guys didn't panic, they got it done.”
Rider (5-6)
trailed 18-15 before junior Ed Bordas (Montgomery,
NY/Valley Central), ranked 31st
in the nation, won a major decision for the team victory. “Huge win for Eddie,”
Taylor said.
“He did a nice job. He majored the kid on take downs which is what we needed
for the victory. Eddie has improved so much on his feet.”
“Every time
I go out there I try to pin,” Bordas said, “and that was no different today. I
kept on taking him down but couldn't turn him. Once a got a good lead I just
concentrated on getting the major so we would have the points needed for the
victory.”
With the
win Bordas improved to 19-9, 9-2 in duals.
Rider
junior Michael Kessler (Randallstown,
MD/Owings Mills), ranked 25th in the nation at 157, defeated Hadley
Harrison, ranked 26th in the nation, to tie the score at 9-9. “That kid actually beat the wrestler from
Rutgers (who Kessler recently lost to) so that was a nice win for Mike over a
ranked wrestler,” Taylor
said.
With the
victory Kessler improved to 18-10, 7-4 in duals.
Senior Doug
Umbehauer (Shamong, NJ/Lenape), ranked fifth in the nation, won
at 184 to give Rider a 15-12 lead. With the win Umbehauer improves to 13-3, 8-2
in duals.
Senior
Jason Lapham (West Chazy, NY/Beekmantown),
ranked 29th in the nation, won at 165 to give Rider its first lead,
12-9. Lapham improved to 18-10.
Sophomore
Fred Rodgers (Perkiomenville,
PA/Boyertown) got Rider on the
board with a victory at 141, improving to 17-16 overall.
Freshman
Aaron Nester (Transfer, PA/Reynolds) won to cut the Clarion lead to 9-6,
improving to 5-5 on the season.
For Clarion
(7-12), sophomore Jay Ivanco, ranked 21st in the nation, won to
start the match, and the Golden Eagles won by fall at 133 and 197. Rider began
the match trailing 9-0. “I wasn't too happy at that point,” Taylor said.
“When you are in a match and two of your wrestlers get pinned it is awfully
hard to win.”
Rider hosts
Drexel Tuesday in a Colonial Athletic Association dual meet. “We look forward
to wrestling them,” Taylor
said. “They've got a good group so we have to get ready.”
Bordas is
the top ranked heavyweight in the CAA and Drexel's Kyle Frey is ranked fourth
in the CAA. “I'm just going to go out and try to beat the kid up and get a pin,
just like I always do,” Bordas said.
