College Wrestling CAA Duals
Rider University 26, George Mason 14
Hofstra University 23, Rider 12
Rider 23, Binghamton University 13
FAIRFAX, VA?The Broncs won two of three dual meets at the CAA Duals, hosted by George Mason Saturday, winning 16 of the 30 matches. “Overall I'm pleased, getting out of here with two wins and taking four bouts from Hofstra,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor. “We wrestled hard.”
The Broncs (4-5, 2-1 CAA) defeated host Mason (2-5, 0-2 CAA) before losing to 18th ranked Hofstra (5-1, 2-0 CAA). In the final dual of the day the Broncs defeated Binghamton (8-7, 0-2 CAA).
For Rider, junior Ed Bordas (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central), the top ranked heavyweight in the CAA, won all three of his bouts. “Eddie had a good day,” Taylor said. “He wrestled well and looked good.”
Junior Michael Kessler (Randallstown, MD/Owings Mills), ranked 17th in the nation and third in the CAA, lost to the top ranked 157 in the CAA from Hofstra before defeating the second ranked CAA wrestler from Binghamton. Kessler began the day by pinning the fifth ranked wrestler in the CAA from Mason. “Mike had three tough matches and won two,” Taylor said. “He beat Patterson (of Binghamton) who Mike had lost to before.”
Senior Doug Umbehauer (Shamong, NJ/Lenape), ranked fifth in the nation and first in the CAA, won twice, losing only to the eighth ranked wrestler in the nation from Binghamton. “Doug losing was the only sore spot today,” Taylor said.
Freshman Aaron Nestor (Transfer, PA/Reynolds) won twice at 149, upsetting the sixth ranked 149 in the CAA from Mason. “Nester beat the kid from Mason and then beat a good kid from Hofstra who had just beaten the top ranked 149 in the CAA from Boston,” Taylor said. ”He showed more today than he has since the time he has been at Rider. He wrestled well.”
Senior Jason Lapham (West Chazy, NY/Beekmantown) and junior Michael Miller (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) also won twice on the day for Rider. “Miller's only been back (from a year off due to injury) two weeks,” Taylor said. “He's getting better each match, getting his timing down.”
The Broncs take on Rutgers in the battle of the Garden State next Saturday at the RAC, as part of a doubleheader with a pair of nationally ranked high school matches.
