FAIRFAX, VA?The Broncs lost to host George Mason before losing to nationally ranked Hofstra at the sixth annual Colonial Athletic Association Duals Friday night. “We didn't wrestle very well tonight,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor. “We looked sluggish.”
Against Mason, senior Don Fisch (Williamstown, N.J./Delsea) collected his 100th career win, and 101 came against Hofstra. “I'm very proud of Donnie,” Taylor said. “He's been a mainstay for us for four years and has accomplished a lot of things. I'm happy for him.”
Junior Jason Lapham (West Chazy, N.Y./Beekmantown) and junior Doug Umbehauer (Shamong, N.J./Lenape) also won twice for Rider. “Doug looked very good for not practicing for 17 days due to a concussion,” Taylor said.
Against Mason, Lapham tied the score at 12-12 with a victory at 165, and Umbehauer gave Rider a brief 17-16 lead before senior T.J. Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) was upset at 197. “The George Mason kids wrestled tough and you have to give them credit,” Taylor said. “”Byers is very good for a freshman and T.J. was doing well until he was taken down at the end,” Taylor said.
Hofstra is the six-time defending CAA Champion. Rider has not defeated Hofstra in a dual meet since the1998-99, losing the last nine. “The Hofstra kids are very good,” Taylor said.
On Saturday Rider takes on Campbell and Binghamton. “Things can only go up from here tomorrow,” Taylor said. “We'll get up and do the best we can.”
