HAMPTON, Va.--The Rider University wrestling team is competing at the Virginia Duals National College Tournament this weekend. On Friday, the Broncs defeated Duquesne before losing to the top seed, third ranked Oklahoma State.

Senior T.J. Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff), ranked 11th in the nation at 197, won both of his matches for Rider, as did his younger brother, sophomore 157 Rob Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff). Both won a bout by pin. “They both competed very hard and had tough matches,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor.

The eighth seed in the 16-team tournament, Rider won nine of the 10 bouts against Duquesne, with pins by sophomore Fred Rodgers (Perkiomenville, Pa./Boyertown), junior Jason Lapham (West Chazy, N.Y./Beekmantown), T.J. Morrison  and junior Ed Bordas (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central).

Against the top seed, third ranked Oklahoma State, T.J. Morrison won in overtime and Rob Morrison won by fall. “T.J. was behind and evened it up, then he was behind again and evened it up again,” Taylor said.  “T.J. took him down with eight seconds left and had to ride him the eight seconds because Foster had riding time. T. J. took him down in overtime for the win. It was a nice win.”

“Jason (Lapham) lost a close match to the kid who just beat the number one wrestler (from Iowa) in the country,” Taylor said.  “Jason led most of the match but was trailing 6-5 and had to take some chances to get a take down. He looked real good in both matches.”

The Broncs were competing without three injured starters, senior 149 Don Fisch (Williamstown, N.J./Delsea), junior 184 Doug Umbehauer (Shamong, N.J./Lenape) and sophomore 174 Mike Miller (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine).  Rider lost four of the six bouts at those three weights.

“Donnie injured his neck at Bloomsburg and it stiffened up on him,” Taylor said. “Doug (ranked 11th in the nation) and Mike didn't even make the trip.”

Rider (1-6) takes on either Bucknell or Lehigh Saturday morning at 10am in the consolation bracket.
