Rider's Armstrong Excels at NYC Marathon
NEW YORK, NY?Terrance Armstrong, a 1994 graduate of Rider University and a member of the Rider Athletics Hall of Fame, placed 53rd overall at the New York City Marathon Sunday.
“I think there were close to 35,000 runners, so 53rd out of 35,000 is obviously pretty good,” said Rider cross country coach Bob Hamer.
Armstrong finished in 2:30.32. “That's a very good effort,” said Hamer. “That is about nine minutes off of the Olympic Trials qualifier.”
The top American placed 10th overall in 2:13.13. Seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong finished in 2:59.36.
“New York is one of the tougher marathons,” said Hamer. “With the hills and the bridges and the hills through the park, it's not a fast one like Chicago.”
“That pretty spectacular,” said Ed Roskiewicz, Armstrong's former coach at Rider and currently a track coach at Princeton University.
At Rider Armstrong was the Rider male Athlete of the Year in 1994. He won 10 conference gold medals and competed on seven Conference Championship teams, running cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field.
He was inducted into the Rider Athletics Hall of Fame in February, 2006.
Another former Bronc in the New York City marathon was Matt Ciociola '06 (Clementon/Bishop Eustace), who placed 371st in a time of 2:49. “That is a great accomplishment for his first time out,” said Hamer.
