LAWRENCEVILLE?The Rider University men's basketball team celebrated the 2007-08 championship season at its annual Awards Banquet Sunday.

 

Senior Jason Thompson (Mt. Laurel/Lenape) was named the winner of the Gil Rossi Award as the team's Most Valuable Player.

 

Freshman Mike Ringgold (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) was named the team Rookie of the Year.

 

Senior Kevin Hickman (Newark, Del./Wilmington Christian) received the Richard Bubacz Award for Sportsmanship, Leadership and Scholarship.

 

Senior Kamron Warner (Pleasantville) received the Coaches' Award as the team Most Improved Player.

 

The Bronc Backer Award, for generous contribution to and support of Rider basketball, was presented to Rider Associate Vice President Debbie Stasolla and to Rider Hall of Famer Mark Wilcox '94.

 

The Haggerty Award Winner as the MET Basketball Writers' Player of the Year, Thompson was the US Basketball Writers' Association District II Player of the Year, the MAAC Player of the Year, a National Association of Basketball Coaches All-District 3 selection, an Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American and was named to the 15-man collegeinsider.com All-America team. He finished second in the nation in rebounding (12.1), 18th in blocked shots (2.7), 29th in scoring (20.4) and 36th in field goal percentage (.560).

 

Ringgold was named to the MAAC All-Rookie team and was named to the collegeinsider.com Mid-Major All-Freshman team. Ringgold ranked second in the MAAC in field goal percentage and 11th in steals, averaging 7.1 points and 4.7 rebounds per game in 33 starts.

 

Warner Played in 26 games and compiled a career-high 121 points, making a career-high 25 three-point field goals.

 

Hickman was named to the MAAC All-Academic team.

 

The Broncs advanced to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship Game for the second time in four years after finishing in first place in the MAAC regular season with a 13-5 conference record. Rider was invited to take part in the inaugural College Basketball Invitational after winning a best-ever 21 regular season games. The 23 victories overall is the most ever for a Rider men's basketball team and was the most in the MAAC this year.
