BROOKVILLE, NY – The Rider University field hockey team got off, to a strong start in NEC play Friday, defeating LIU, 4-0. The Broncs improve to 1-6 on the season, while the Sharks fall to 0-6 following the conference opener for both teams.
Rider broke through late in the first. On a quick restart following an LIU foul,
Kate Mahmud (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown West) played a long cross just above the circle to
Caroline Mauer (Weisbaden, Germany/Humboldt Schule). Mauer played a ball into the circle that
Ryleigh Damminger (Paulsboro, NJ/GCIT) deflected past the LIU goalie to give the Broncs the lead.
The Broncs had an opportunity to extend the lead late in the first half, but the Rider shot went just above the crossbar and the lead remained just one at the break.
Late in the third, the Broncs broke through again. Following another quick restart from an LIU foul,
Addison McConnell (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional) made a pass to Mauer. Mauer, this time on the left side of the circle, fired a centering pass that
Liv Cox (Conestoga, PA/Penn Manor) got a stick on, to find the back of the cage and double the lead.
The Broncs wasted no time, extending the lead in the fourth, drawing a penalty corner just 14 seconds into the frame.
Ella Lewis (West Chester, PA/Downingtown West) made the insert to McConnell, who played a give-and-go pass to Mauer. McConnell then ripped a shot that
Emma Bonshak (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) deflected into the back of the net to make it 3-0. The Broncs rounded out the scoring with just under three minutes to play.
Amanda Walker made the entry into the circle from the right side and played a reverse chip that the LIU goalie got a stick on.
Eja-Maylin Mahdaoui (Hoorn, Netherlands/Copernicus) got the rebound and lifted the backhand shot over the outstretched goalie to produce the final tally.
