LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider University women's lacrosse team was defeated Saturday evening on Ben Cohen Field, falling to Rhode Island, 14-10. The Broncs record is evened at 1-1, while the Rams improve to 1-2.
After the Rams scored the game's opening goal,
Maggie Hance (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) scored off a feed from
Kayleigh Colleary (Buffalo, NY/Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart[Butler]) to even the game. Rhode Island would then go on a 5-1 run to take a 6-2 lead after the opening quarter.
Colleary would score to start the second, followed by a goal from
Brynn Merklinger (Mendham, NJ/Mount Saint Mary Academy) to bring the Broncs back within two. The Rams would respond with the final two goals of the half to take an 8-4 lead into the break.
Out of the half, the Rams scored three-straight, extending the lead to 11-4. Hance would score twice for the Broncs in the third, but the Rams led 13-6 entering the fourth.
Back-to-back goals by Merklinger got Rider back to within 13-8. After a goal by Rhode Island,
Hannah Kozik (Ellington, CT/Ellington) scored, then Hance got the Broncs back within four at 14-10, but the Rams would hold possession over the majority of the final three minutes to secure the win.
