LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider wrestling team dropped a 24-6 match to No. 25 Purdue Friday night in Alumni Gym, with the Broncs earning victories in two bouts.
No. 24/19
Tyler Klinsky opened the dual at 125 pounds against Ashton Jackson and set the tone early, scoring two first-period takedowns including a slick hi-c to build a 6-1 lead. Klinsky added an escape to start the second period to extend his advantage to 7-1. Jackson mounted a late push in the third with an escape and a takedown to close the gap to 7-5, but Klinsky sealed the bout with an escape to secure the 8-5 decision.
Purdue answered with a decision win at 133 pounds before No. 16/15
Elijah Griffin took the mat at 141. Griffin started fast, recording two takedowns in the opening 45 seconds to take a 6-2 lead after one period. An escape in the second stretched the margin to 7-2, and Griffin controlled the remainder of the match to earn a 7-3 decision.
The Boilermakers claimed narrow decision victories at 149, 157 and 165 pounds, though
Brendon Abdon kept things close at 165, holding off No. 4 and reigning national finalist Joey Blaze in an 8-3 decision to limit Purdue's team-point output and make the score 12-6.
At 174 pounds, No. 32
Enrique Munguia battled No. 22/16 Brody Baumann in a tight battle. After giving up an early takedown, Munguia trailed 3-1 after the first period before evening the score with a reversal at the end of the second. Baumann regained the lead with an escape to start the third, and despite late scrambles and a near takedown from Munguia, Baumann held on for the 4-3 decision, pushing Purdue's advantage to 15-6.
Purdue closed out the dual with decision wins at 184, 197 and 285 pounds to secure the 24-6 victory.
Quotes and Notes
"We let Purdue slow the pace down way too much. They were able to shorten the matches on us, and that's never a good thing.
We have to do a better job of forcing action and creating reactions instead of waiting and picking our spots. It's a lesson learned. We can't let teams dictate the tempo and shorten matches. We had four bouts decided by two points or less, and any one of those could've gone the other way. That's a 24-point swing right there but these are things to learn from and we will."
