LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider University field hockey team got back in the win column Friday evening, defeating New Haven, 4-0, on Ben Cohen Field. The Broncs improve to 2-5 on the season and 1-1 in NEC play. The Chargers drop to 0-8 on the year, including 0-3 in league games.
Late in the first, the Broncs broke through on the penalty corner.
Ang Borisow (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) made the insert to
Anna Finn (Windsor, NY/Windsor Central), who blasted home the shot from the top of the circle to put the Broncs on top.
Less than a minute into the second quarter, Finn was at it again dribbling through a pair of Chargers before ripping another shot into the back of the cage to extend the lead. The Broncs had an opportunity to make it 3-0 late in the half, but
Semra Said's (Mannheim, Germany/Feudenheim Gymnasium Mannheim) shot that beat the goaltender rang off the post and the game remained 2-0 at the break.
Following a scoreless third quarter, the Broncs delivered on the corner again. After moving the ball to
Megan Normile (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt), Normile delivered the ball to the front of net, where
Emma Bonshak (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) deflected the pass by the New Haven keeper to extend the lead to 3-0. The Broncs closed out the scoring minutes later when Normile came in from the right side of the circle and made a centering pass that
Valeria Perales (Madrid, Spain/IES Mirasierra) deflected into the back of the cage to produce the final score.
Quotes & Notes
"We knew it was going to be a tough game. Any time it's an NEC team, regardless of who they are, there's a lot at stake. Our goal is just to focus quarter by quarter. We did really well early, started to slow, but we reeled it back in, so that's huge progress for us."
– Head Coach Gina Carey-Smith
"It was important to get a win. We've been doing all the work to com together and we really stuck to the game plan. It took us a little bit to actually finish, but eventually we did. We love playing at home, so we're really excited to be able to get back on our field and carry this momentum."
– Senior Defender Megan Normile
"I just work off of my teammates. It's not just on me. My teammates made me look good today. I received good passes. They had great first touches, and I just was the one to put the ball in the goal. Sometimes in the offensive 25, we aren't looking for the shots. We have a really strong corner crew and that's where we excel."
