LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider University field hockey team scored early and held on late, defeating Sacred Heart, 2-1, Sunday afternoon on Ben Cohen Field. The Broncs improve to 3-5 on the season and 2-1 in NEC play. The Pioneers fall to 3-6 on the year, including 1-2 in league games.
Less than a minute into the game,
Semra Said (Mannheim, Germany/Feudenheim Gymnasium Mannheim) gained possession for the Broncs and made a lead pass to
Valeria Perales (Madrid, Spain/IES Mirasierra), who beat the goalie short side to give Rider the early lead.
Rider would not get a shot for the remainder of the opening half, but the Broncs' defense was stout, keeping the Pioneers off the board, including
Anna Finn (Windsor, NY/Windsor Central) making a strong play on the post during a Sacred Heart corner, to take the 1-0 lead into the break.
Midway through the third, the Broncs struck again, this time on the penalty corner. Perales made the insert to the top of the circle, where Finn delivered a blast that found the back of the cage and gave the Broncs the two-goal edge.
The insurance goal would prove to be huge as early in the fourth quarter, the Pioneers were awarded a penalty stroke. After converting and making it a one goal game, Sacred Heart had its chances to force the tie, but the Broncs defense held strong fight off three shots and three corners in the final minute to secure the win.

"Since the last game, Jade's been hyper-focused. We do a lot of film to break everything down, whether its one-on-one or with the whole defense, and that's really been helping her.
