Baseball Sweeps Manhattan Behind Tiroly’s Two-Homer Day

TEANECK, NJ – The Rider baseball team swept Sunday's doubleheader against Manhattan, powered by Joe Tiroly's two home runs in game two at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex. With the victories, the Broncs improve to 21-9 overall and 12-5 in MAAC play.

Game 1
The Broncs struck early, putting together what would be their most productive inning and ultimately the difference-maker in the game.

Nick Shuhet got things started by driving in Anthony Paskell for the game's first run. With the bases loaded and just one out, Charley Magoulick followed with a clutch two-run single, giving the Broncs a 3-0 lead after the first inning.

From there, strong pitching from Brian Young kept the game in check. Young would allow just two hits in the opening frame and one more in the fourth, keeping Manhattan off the board.

The Broncs ended the scoring drought in the top of the sixth thanks to aggressive baserunning by Matt Leahy, who stole two bases and came home on a throwing error to extend the lead to 4-0.

Paskell reached base again off a walk, and Joe Tiroly brought him home with a single to left, pushing the score to 5-0 by the end of the sixth.

Zach Silfies came on in relief of Young in the eighth with a runner on first. Although Manhattan managed three hits off Silfies, they couldn't break through.

Silfies closed things out in dominant fashion in the ninth, recording two key strikeouts to secure the 5-0 shutout win for the Broncs.

Game 2
The Broncs opened the scoring in the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly from Joe Tiroly.

Manhattan quickly responded in the bottom of the second when Trevor Hansen launched a three-run homer to give the Jaspers a 3-1 advantage.

Tiroly answered right back in the top of the third, blasting his 13th home run of the season over the centerfield wall, a three-run shot that put Rider back on top, 4-3.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Jaspers evened the score at 4-4 thanks to a solo home run from Aidan Taclas.

With a runner on first and no outs, Rider turned to the bullpen, bringing in Gavin Hawkes to relieve Clayton Poliey. Hawkes kept up his dominant season, retiring the side in order with a 1-2-3 inning to keep the game tied.

Both teams remained hitless until the top of the seventh when Anthony Paskell singled to center.

Paskell's hit set up Tiroly's second home run of the day, this one a three-run shot over the right field wall, pushing the Broncs ahead, 7-4.

In the top of the ninth, Rider threatened again after Tiroly was intentionally walked and Matt Leahy reached on catcher's interference, but they couldn't add to the lead.

Zach Silfies came on to close the game in the ninth, relieving Gavin Hawkes, who had kept the Jaspers hitless since entering. Silfies struck out two to secure the sweep for the Broncs.
