LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – On a windy Wednesday afternoon at Sonny Pittaro Field, Rider baseball fell to in-state foe Princeton, 20-8, in a game that saw momentum shift early and often before the Tigers pulled away late.
Princeton opened the scoring in the top of the first with an RBI groundout.
Rider responded in the bottom half of the inning, tying the game on a balk before
Will Gallagher delivered an RBI single to bring home
Richie Sica, giving the Broncs a brief 2-1 lead.
The Tigers tied things back up in the fourth inning and then exploded for seven runs in the sixth, capitalizing on three hits and a series of miscues to surge ahead 9-2.
Gallagher tried to spark a rally in the bottom of the sixth with a leadoff single, eventually reaching third on a Princeton throwing error.
Matt Leahy followed with an RBI single to bring Gallagher home, and Rider added two more runs in the frame on another Tiger error and a
Kyle Neri RBI single to left, trimming the deficit to 9-5.
Princeton continued to pile on runs, adding five in the seventh, highlighted by a solo homer from Caden Shapiro, to stretch the lead to 14-5.
Griffin Puvel drove in
Joe Tiroly with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth, but the Tigers responded yet again with a six-run ninth inning, capped by Jack Bold's two-run homer to make it 20-6.
Rider plated two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit, as the Broncs fell 20-8.
