Women's Lacrosse Tops Iona in Non-Conference Game

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider University women's lacrosse team won a non-conference game Wednesday evening against a conference foe, defeating Iona, 14-7, on Ben Cohen Field. The Broncs improve to 3-2 on the season, while the Gaels fall to 0-3.

After the Gaels opened the scoring, Rider got three-straight goals off the sticks of Toni Gismondi (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford[VCU]), Elena Bontatibus (Simsbury, CT/Simsbury), and Anna Devlin (Marmora, NJ/Ocean City[TCNJ]). Leading 4-3, Rider closed out the opening quarter with goals by Madison Rothwein (), Gismondi, and Katie Walsh (Marlton, NJ/Camden Catholic[FDU-Florham]). Walsh would then score to open the second quarter to extend the lead to 8-3 and Rider would lead 9-4 at the half.

Iona would outscore Rider 2-1 in the third quarter, then found a goal early in the fourth to close to within 10-7, but the Broncs closed out the game on a 4-0 run, started by a pair of goals from Elizabeth Shean (Seal Beach, CA/Los Alamitos) followed by Walsh and Selena Carrington (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North[Rutgers]) rounding out the scoring.

Quotes & Notes
"Every game we talk with our team about some lapses and different things. We do have some younger players, but they're stepping up defensively. Our defense has been playing phenomenal. I know that it's not a conference game, but they are in our conference, so getting this win, it's big for us confidence wise. It's a statement of where we want to be, where we're going." – Head Coach Evan Mager

"For the returners, it's the best feeling ever. Just being able to make that statement, we're back and we're ready for all of you. [Avery and I] push each other on and off the field. We're definitely very different so we balance each other out." – Redshirt Junior Goalie Jamie Kubach

"In the beginning we weren't attacking as aggressively as we should have. We just wanted to emulate how we started , so we could finish the game just as strong. Last year was a really gritty game that we felt like we should have come out on top, so I think this is redemption for us, and shows that we can compete in the MAAC." – Senior Attack Selena Carrington

- Rider evens the all-time series with the Gaels at 1-1.
- Jamie Kubach (Philadelphia, PA/William Penn Charter[FDU-Florham]) made the start in net, and played 30 minutes, allowing four goals and making six saves to earn the win.
- Avery May (Aurora, CO/Grandview) played the final 30 minutes, allowing three goals and making three saves.
- Walsh recorded her second hat trick of the season, and ninth as a Bronc, scoring three goals.
- Carrington added her third hat trick of the season, and tenth at Rider, with a trio of goals.

Broncs By The Numbers
- Both teams recorded 26 shots, with Rider holding a 19-16 edge in shots on goal.
