PHILADELPHIA, PA – The Rider University women's lacrosse team was defeated in a tight game Thursday afternoon at Temple, 15-12. The Broncs and Owls both saw their records on the season evened at 1-1.
The game was back and forth early with
Selena Carrington (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North[Rutgers]),
Toni Gismondi (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford[VCU]), and
Katie Walsh (Marlton, NJ/Camden Catholic[FDU-Florham]) all scoring, but Temple made sure that neither side would go ahead by more than a goal early. Tied 3-3, Temple took control of the game with a 4-0 run. Trailing 9-5 midway through the second quarter, Rider scored three-straight goals to close out the first half, the final one a highlight reel goal when Walsh took advantage of a turnover and found Gismondi in transition, who fired the shot behind her back to make it just a one-goal game at the break.
Once again, Temple went on a run to open the second half, scoring four-straight goals before once again Rider found a counter. Carrington bookended goals by Walsh and
Anna Devlin (Marmora, NJ/Ocean City[TCNJ]) to bring the Broncs to back within one at 13-12 with 11:31 to play. The Temple defense would harden, keeping the Broncs off the board for the remainder of the game, while the Owls scored twice on the offensive end to produce the final score.
Quotes & Notes
"We had a battle today. No one is ever happy with a loss, but someone wise once told me you are either winning or you are learning so we are learning from today. We are a second-year program battling in a tight game against a storied program. We have seen a ton of growth already and there were a lot of moments in the game that we made certain decisions they were able to capitalize on. If we clean those things up, we are changing the outcome of a close game like this."
