LEWISBURG, PA – The Rider University women's lacrosse team suffered its second-straight tight defeat, falling at Bucknell, 9-8. The Broncs drop to 1-2 on the season, while the Bison evened their record at 1-1.
The Broncs jumped out to an early lead, getting a free-position goal from
Anna Devlin (Marmora, NJ/Ocean City[TCNJ]), before
Katie Walsh (Marlton, NJ/Camden Catholic[FDU-Florham]) and
Elizabeth Shean (Seal Beach, CA/Los Alamitos) each scored to extend the lead to 3-0. The Bison would answer, coming back to tie the game 4-4 at the end of the opening quarter.
In the second, Devlin and
Selena Carrington (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North[Rutgers]) both found the back of the net, but each time the Bison had an answer, sending the game to half, tied 6-6.
In the second half, it was Rider's turn to counter the Bucknell scoring. After the Bison scored to make it 7-6, Shean scored her second of the day to even the game once again. The Bison would score to make it 8-7 entering the fourth.
After no scoring for over nine minutes in the fourth, Shean would finally find the back of the cage to even the game once again. The Bison would once again take the lead with a goal with 3:31 remaining, and the Broncs would be unable to find an answer.
Quotes & Notes
"Our defense played one of the best games since our program started. Our goalie play was great, the defensive stops we made were crucial. Our second half was not at all what we've been doing. They held us to four shots in the second half and much of that was because we struggled settling the ball. It is vital to put points up when your defense is making stops and giving the offense opportunities. I thought our draw team did really well, especially in the second half, but we need to capatalize on our opportunities. Playing a Patriot League team for the first time ever and being within a goal is definitely a positive, but we are confident those games can and should be ours to win."
