PHILADELPHIA, PA – The Rider University field hockey team got a game-winning goal in double-overtime off the stick of
Valeria Perales (Madrid, Spain/IES Mirasierra) Sunday afternoon to defeat La Salle, 4-3. The Broncs improve to 5-5 on the season, while the Explorers fall to 3-8.
After a scoreless first overtime, the Broncs controlled the second overtime session, peppering the La Salle goalie with shots before finally Perales found the back of the cage, hitting home a rebound off a shot from
Ryleigh Damminger (Paulsboro, NJ/GCIT), and giving Rider the win despite never leading previously in the contest.
It was the Explorers getting on the board first, scoring just under 10 minutes into the contest, taking advantage of a rebound to go up 1-0. Just two minutes later the Broncs would respond. The Broncs earned a penalty stroke, which
Megan Normile (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) converted to even the score through the opening 15 minutes.
Early in the second La Salle would again take the lead, scoring to break the tie, but late in the half,
Semra Said (Mannheim, Germany/Feudenheim Gymnasium Mannheim) would score and once again the Broncs equalized and the game went to the break tied 2-2.
Late in the third quarter the Explorers finally broke through on the penalty corner. After the initial La Salle attempt was blocked, and the second effort was saved, the third shot found its way to the back of the cage to once again give La Salle the lead.
With just over nine minutes remaining in regulation it was Perales, who scored to even the game for the third time, setting up her overtime heroics.
