LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider University field hockey team suffered its first setback of the season Friday evening, falling 2-1 in double overtime to Bellarmine. The Broncs drop to 2-1, while the Knights improve to an equal 2-1.
After a scoreless opening quarter, Bellarmine broke through early in the second when a scramble in front led to a pass to an open player in space to put the Knights up 1-0.
The Broncs would find the equalizer late in the third.
Olivia Machiavelli (Madrid, Spain/International School Sek el Castillo) dribbled into the circle on the right side and flipped the ball over the goalie's pads where
Katie Wuerstle (Schwenksville, PA/Perkiomen Valley[Kent St.]) tapped the ball into the back of the cage to even the score at 1-1.
After a scoreless fourth, the teams went to an extra session. The Knights had the first chance in the overtime off a penalty corner where
Megan Normile (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) kept a shot from entering the cage at the far post to extend the contest. The Broncs would get a pair of corners of their own in the first overtime, but would not be able to convert.
After the Broncs had two shots within the opening two minutes of the second overtime period, the Knights claimed possession and flipped the field quickly getting behind the Bronc defense and converted a one-on-one opportunity to claim the victory.
