What You Need To Know
- The fourth-seeded Rider University men's tennis team competes at MAAC Men's Tennis Championships, opening competition Saturday at 2 p.m. against top-seeded Fairfield.
- The winner between the Broncs and Stags will face off with the winner of Saturday's other semifinal between second-seeded Quinnipiac and third-seed Marist in Sunday's Championship match, also at 2 p.m.
- The Broncs qualified for MAAC Championships for the first time since 2010, when all teams qualified for the tournament. The Broncs' No. 4 seed is their highest in 27 years in the MAAC and marks the first time they've qualified for the tournament since it moved to a four-team tournament in 2011.
- Third-year Rider Head Coach Tom Battaglia was named MAAC Men's Tennis Coach of the Year. He's led the Broncs to consecutive 3-3 finishes in league play. However, the Broncs came up on the short end of a tie-breaker in 2023, bumping them from the tournament field.
- Rider earned all three of its MAAC wins by 4-3 scores, clinching the matches at No. 6 singles to break a 3-3 tie on each occasion. On March 29 at Niagara, it was Ibragim Turkambekov pulling out a 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, victory over Manuel Alonso, before Jonathan Arbittier took over in the No. 6 flight and won the next two – 6-2, 7-6 over Jarrett Karnibad of Mount St. Mary's on April 9, before surging past Siena's Dylan Breen, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, on April 12.
- Arbittier was 3-0 in league play at No. 6 this Spring.
- Roger Martinez has also been a bright spot, posting a 4-2 mark out of the No. 4 singles position in league play. Dhruv Tangri (3-3, No. 2 singles) and Jake Grimes (2-2, No. 5 singles) have also posted positive results against MAAC competition.
- The Broncs have used the same three doubles tandems in all six MAAC matches this season, with the top duo of Turkambekov and Cooper Dillon posting a 3-3 mark out of the top spot, Nathan Slattery and Jake Grimes going 1-5 at No. 2 and Giacomo Ghitti and Dhruv Tangri going 2-4 at No. 3.
- A league-high 11 Broncs were named to the MAAC All-Academic Team. To be eligible, student-athletes must post at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and complete at least two semesters at their institution.
