Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Wins Fourth-Straight With Overtime Victory Over Marist

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider University women's basketball team needed an extra five minutes, but ultimately defeated Marist, 62-61, Saturday afternoon. The Broncs improve to 9-16 on the season and 6-10 in MAAC play, while the Red Foxes drop to 5-21 overall and 3-13 in league games.

The Broncs used the long ball early, with Taylor Langan (Lake Hopatcong, NJ/Jefferson Township[Colgate/Millersville]), Molly Lynch (Sea Girt, NJ/Rutgers Prep), Jessika Schiffer (Iserlohn, Germany/Deutschhaus Gymnasium Würzburg[Buffalo]), and Sanaa Redmond (Philadelphia, PA/The Shipley School[Samford]) all knocking down three pointers in the opening quarter to help the Broncs take a 14-12 lead after the opening quarter.

With Rider leading 19-18 midway through the second quarter, the Red Foxes closed out the half on a 7-0 run to take a 25-19 lead into the halftime break.

Rider came out strong in the third quarter, going on a 10-0 run out of the break, led by eight points from Mariona Cos-Morales (Matadepera, Spain/IESMatadepera[Casper College]) during the run. Rider led 39-36 entering the fourth.

Leading 44-42, Kaylan Deveney (Medford, NJ/Life Center Academy) scored a layup, then Schiffer added a three to put the Broncs on top 49-42. With the Red Foxes trailing 52-46, Marist went on an 8-1 run, including a pair of free throws with 20 seconds remaining to take a 54-53 lead. The Broncs drew a foul on the other end with 12 seconds left, but could only hit one of two at the line to tie the game, but made a strong defensive stand to force the extra session.

The Broncs scored first in the extra session before Marist scored to tie the game. After Cos-Morales scored to put Rider up 58-56, the Red Foxes drained a three to go up 59-58 with 2:01 remaining. The score remained there until Lynch drove and hit a floater to put Rider on top 60-59 with 34 seconds left in the extra session. After Langan secured a steal while narrowly staying in bounds, the Red Foxes would be forced to foul and send Makayla Firebaugh (Winchester, VA/James Wood) to the line with just one second remaining. Firebaugh made both free throws, but the Broncs fouled the shooter on the desperation heave attempt. After making the first two free throws, the third came off the rim and into Langan's hands as the final fraction of a second ran off the clock.
