FAIRFAX, VA – David Szuba won the 285-pound title on Sunday at the Patriot Open in Fairfax, VA. Szuba joined three more Broncs on the podium with
Liam Scrivanich (165),
Steyn De Lange (197 lbs), and
Brock Zurawski (197 lbs) each finishing in the top six.
David Szuba (Rider-Unattached) met with Everest Ouellette (First Flight) for his first match of the day. Szuba took care of business quickly earning a first-period fall to move on to the quarterfinals. The senior then took on Brown's Alex Semenenko. An escape and a riding time point were enough for the 2-0 decision victory for Szuba to move on to the semifinals. Szuba would get his second first-period fall of the day over Emmanuel Ulrich (American) to earn himself a spot in the finals against American's William Jarrell. Szuba secured three dominant takedowns en route to a 12-4 major decision to claim the 285 lbs title.
Liam Scrivanich (165 lbs) started his day against George Mason's Sean Coughlin. During the match, Scrivanich racked up three takedowns en route to a 13-2 major decision. Scrivanich would drop his quarterfinal match against Sean Seefeldt (PRTC) after being up 7-0 early on in the first period. Scrivanich would take home a fifth-place finish after winning two straight matches in the consolation bracket.
Steyn De Lange made it all the way to the semifinal round with a 5-2 victory over Gage Yackee (Unaffiliated) and 4-2 gritty win over Virginia Tech's Glean Gonzalez in the first two rounds of the tournament. De Lange gave up a second-period takedown against Maryland's Chase Mielnik which was the difference in the 4-1 loss in the semifinals. De Lange dropped to the third-place match to take on Justin Griffith (Drexel-Unattached). An escape and a riding time point would give De Lange the close 2-1 victory to take home a third-place finish.
Brock Zurawski also competed in the 197-pound bracket and met with Justin Griffith (Drexel-Unattached) in his first match of the day. Zurawski dropped a 6-3 decision but would win three straight matches in the consolation bracket to bring him back to the fifth-place match. Zurawski took on Ethan Weatherspoon (Virgina). After trailing 7-3 in the final period, Zurawski secured two crucial takedowns to give him the 9-8 lead with about 40 seconds remaining. Weatherspoon did not go away and secured a reversal in the final seconds to secure a 10-9 victory over Zurawski.
