BALTIMORE, MD –
Tariq Ingraham (Philadelphia, PA/Bonner-Prendergast [Wake Forest]) led the Rider University men's basketball team with 16 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots as the Broncs defeated Coppin State, 64-53, Saturday afternoon at the Physical Education Complex Arena. With the win, the Broncs' second straight, Rider improves to 2-1, while the Eagles fall to 0-3.
After Coppin State opened the scoring with a Peter Oduro bucket, the Broncs scored the next seven points and didn't trail again in the opening 20 minutes. Rider gradually built its lead up to as many as nine on a
Tyriek Weeks (Warwick, RI/Pilgrim [Miami Dade College]) slip to the basket. But Coppin State answered with an 11-3 run to pull back to within one, 23-22, with 3:27 left in the half.
Consecutive
Alaaeddine Boutayeb (Casablanca, Morocco/Miami Dade College [Florida State/Arkansas State]) buckets inside stopped the bleeding, before consecutive
Flash Burton (Philadelphia, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) buckets in the paint extended the lead back to seven. Coppin State got a Toby Nnadozie three-pointer with 13 seconds left to cut the Broncs' lead to 31-27 at the half. Ingraham and Burton led Rider with seven points apiece at the break.
Khali Horton scored consecutive buckets to open the second-half scoring for Coppin State, extending the run to 7-0 and tying the game at 31-31 at the 18:24 mark. But Rider responded with a 12-0 run and never trailed again. A
Ruben Rodriguez (Reading, PA/Reading) jumper started the run with a jumper, while
T.J. Weeks Jr. (Warwick, RI/Bishop Hendricken Catholic [UMass]) scored five points in the run. The Broncs' advantage stretched to as many as 14 points and the Eagles drew no closer than to within eight the rest of the way.
Quotes & Notes
"I thought it was going to be a little dicey. I know these guys are at home. I know they're desperate. We're a little tired. Not a lot of prep time. Give our guys credit for figuring it out, trying to find a way. This is what happens when you play a lot of games back-to-back-to-back like this and you don't have a lot of time to practice. Then you have a lot of slippage on offense and defense. And it doesn't stop, because now we've got Navy coming up and then Iowa. So, we've got to continue to try to help these guys get better."
"That's where we talk about depth and where some of our guys off the bench were really good. I thought
Ife West-Ingram was great. I thought Flash gave us some good minutes today as well. I thought
Tyriek Weeks did some good things in the first half as well." –
Rider Head Coach Kevin Baggett
