LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider University field hockey team was defeated in its regular season finale Friday night, falling 2-1 to Wagner in the de facto NEC Regular Season Championship Game. The Broncs will enter the NEC Tournament at 10-8 on the season and 6-2 in league play, while the Seahawks claim the NEC Regular Season Championship, improving to 11-6 overall and 7-1 in league matches.
The Broncs had the better of the play early, earning three corners and firing eight shots in the opening quarter, but could find a way to put a ball into the net. The Broncs extended the shot advantage in the second quarter, but once again, Rider was unable to put a ball into the cage.
Wagner finally opened the scoring early in the third when a loose ball off a rebound made its way across the goal line to put the Seahawks ahead 1-0. Minutes later the Broncs appeared to have the equalizer when
Olivia Machiavelli's (Madrid, Spain/ International School Sek el Castillo) shot got behind the Wagner keeper, but rang off the post.
Midway through the period, the Broncs finally found the equalizer.
Katie Wuerstle (Schwenksville, PA/Perkiomen Valley[Kent St.]) saw her shot get saved, but the ball kicked up toward
Valeria Perales (Madrid, Spain/IES Mirasierra). Perales hit the ball out of the air and into the goal to even the game 1-1.
Before the quarter would run out, Wagner once again took the lead with a Seahawk taking advantage of a loose ball in the circle and taking a reverse chip shot that went into the back of the net for what would be the eventual game-winning goal.
The Broncs had opportunities in the final quarter, but had difficulty entering the circle as the Wagner defense remained stout down the stretch.
Quotes & Notes
"I think we just lost a little bit of energy. The minute you take your foot off the gas, the other team's going to take advantage of that opportunity. We always believe that we can win the game and keep fighting. We need to cash in on our opportunities. We outshot them and had more corners than them, but they came out on top."
– Head Coach Alicia Govannicci
"It was really complicated to get a goal for us. We're trying to move [their goalie] around and get rebounds, and I was ready for any rebound and got the goal."
