STATEN ISLAND, NY – The Rider University field hockey team saw its season come to a close Thursday afternoon, falling 2-1 to Fairfield in the NEC semifinals. The Broncs wrap up the year at 10-9, while the Stags improve to 11-8 and advance to the NEC Championship Game.
Fairfield had Rider on the back foot from the start of the game, opening the scoring just over three minutes into the game, converting on a penalty corner. Rider would quickly recover, scoring less than two minutes later when
Ang Borisow (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) got a steal in the midfield and fired a long pass toward the offensive end that
Valeria Perales (Madrid, Spain/IES Mirasierra) deflected forward onto the stick of
Olivia Machiavelli's (Madrid, Spain/ International School Sek el Castillo). Machiavelli sped ahead of the last defender and maneuvered around the Stag goalie before putting a backhand shot into the net to even the score.
Late in the first, following a scramble in front of the Rider goal, Fairfield managed to get the ball into the back of the cage for what would eventually become the decisive score.
After a scoreless second that did not produce a single shot, the teams played an uneventful third quarter.
Rider saw its best opportunity to tie the game come early in the fourth corner with back-to-back penalty corners, but
Anna Finn (Windsor, NY/Windsor Central) saw her shot saved by the Fairfield goalie and the Broncs would not be able to garner another shot in the waning minutes.
