LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider University Field Hockey team gritted out a low-scoring, 1-0, win Sunday afternoon over Georgetown. The Broncs improve to 2-4 on the season, while the Hoyas fall to 0-6.
Neither side could find a decisive play in the opening half, sending the teams to the break tied 0-0.
Early in the third quarter,
Willemijn Ephraim (Amsterdam, The Netherlands/Vossius Gymnasium) made a reverse chip pass that found the stick of
Carli Ciocco (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East [App State]). Ciocco then pushed her shot by the Georgetown goalie to put Rider in front.
The Hoyas would not go down without a fight, drawing five corners in the final five minutes of the game, including three times getting behind the Rider goalie, but defensive saves by
Kiera Guckavan (Middletown, PA/Middletown Area) and
Megan Normile (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) along with a foul call against Georgetown kept Rider on top and produced the final score.
Quotes & Notes
"We got a full 60 minutes. We're getting a little tired in the fourth quarter, but that Rider pride showed through and they fought to the end, and left it all on the field today."
"We are finally starting to click a little bit all over the field. It's Carli's fifth-year, and she's joining us for the first time, but she brings a lot of leadership and determination. The young players are starting to feel a bit more comfortable and we've been moving some people around. We found a couple pieces to the puzzle we've been missing."
– Head Coach Alicia Govannicci
"It's been an incredible journey to get here. I've been acclimating really well just because these girls are amazing people. We are such a talented team, especially defensively and I trust our corner unit with my life."
"[At App State], I was more of a playmaker, and while I still want to do that, I really love scoring goals and I wanted to be more confident in my ability to score goals."
