Broncs Travel to Down South For Dual with Oklahoma

Rider looks to bounce back following back-to-back losses

– The Rider Broncs look to bounce back from back-to-back losses as they travel south to battle with the Oklahoma Sooners. 

What You Need To Know

Last Time Out
Tyler Klinsky and Ethan Laird were both able to pick up bonus point wins however Rider would fall 19-15 to Bucknell. With the loss, the Broncs drop to 4-4 on the year and Bucknell moves to 6-4 overall.

Rider would get wins at 141 and 149 from #33 McKenzie Bell and #23 Quinn Kinner to lead them to a 11-4 advantage heading to 157. Bell was able to pick up another win over a nationally ranked opponent as he beat #22/#11 Darren Miller by decision. The win adds to Bell's impressive season now with a 28-7 record and wins vs #22/#11 Miller as well as a win over Parker Filius who was ranked #11 at the time of their meeting earlier this year.

- The Last meeting between the Broncs and the Sooners came back in 1995-96

Scouting the Scene

- OU has dropped each of their last two duals and enters the weekend 7-5 and 1-3 in the Big 12
- The Sooners will face off with another Big 12 foe in Missouri Friday, before facing of with the Broncs on Sunday

Face of The Franchise 
- Laird also has not been beaten in duals this season with his lone loss coming at the Southern Scuffle
-Laird remains perfect 3-0 in MAC duals, with all three wins coming with extra team points by major decision or tech fall.
-Laird also ranks among the nation's best at 197 at #7 in the NCAA coaches polls and #8 in the Intermat Rankings
-Earlier this season Laird was able to take down the reigning National Champion Max Dean of Penn St
-Laird is on the verge of a career win 100 at Rider currently with 99 wins as a Bronc.

Broncs In The Rankings 
- #32 McKenzie Bell, #28 Quinn Kinner at 149, and #8 Ethan Laird at 197 (Intermat)
- The NCAA released the first coaches' ranking of the 2022-23 season and four Broncs were nationally ranked. #26 McKenzie Bell (141), #22 Quinn Kinner (149), #7 Ethan Laird (197), and #31 David Szuba (HWT) all represent the Broncs in the national polls.
-The Rider Broncs were again ranked first in the MAC monthly rankings. Richie Koehler, #31 McKenzie Bell, #23 Quinn Kinner, and #7 Ethan Laird all were ranked at the top of their weight in the conference rankings.

Bronc Notes
- The Broncs are coming off a tough season in 2022 in which injuries and redshirt seasons limited the team. Rider finished 8th at MAC Championships.
- Rider returns five NCAA Qualifiers, including two from last season.
- A three-time NCAA Qualifier, Ethan Laird returns following a redshirt season in 2021-22. He qualified for NCAA's at 197 in his true sophomore and junior years, before bumping to heavyweight for 2020-21. He'll wrestle at 197 this season.
- Richie Koehler is a two-time NCAA Qualifier, earning the honor in each of the last two seasons at 133.
- Quinn Kinner, who was an NCAA Qualifier at 141 in his first season at Rider last year, will bump up to 149 this season.
- 2021 NCAA Qualifiers McKenzie Bell and Jake Silverstein also return this season. Bell redshirted last year after going to NCAA's at 141 as a true freshman. Silverstein suffered through injuries last season after qualifying for NCAA's at 165 in 2021.
- John Hangey returns for his sixth season as Rider's Head Coach. The 2020 MAC Co-Coach of the Year has posted a 44-26 dual record with 19 of his wrestlers qualifying for NCAA's in his first six years.
- The Broncs finished 35th at NCAA's last season with 5.5 points.
