Wrestling Gets Ready For Busy Weekend in Lawrenceville

Rider hosts George Mason, Cleveland St, and Drexel as part of The Weekend

Rider vs Cleveland St and Drexel
LOCATION- Lawrenceville, NJ
LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ- Following back-to-back victories the Rider Broncs look to end their season strong as they host MAC foes George Mason, and Cleveland St as well as the Drexel Dragons apart of a busy weekend in Lawrenceville.
 
Last Time Out
The Rider Broncs Wrestling team finished their weekend with a 25-12 win vs. MAC leader Clarion to sweep the weekend vs conference opponents. With the win, Rider moves to 6-5 overall and 4-1 in the MAC.
 
Rider was led to victory by #29 McKenzie Bell, #22 Quinn Kinner, and #5 Ethan Laird, who all were able to pick up bonus point wins on the afternoon. Bell continued his hot streak with his seventh major of the year and his third in a row, outsourcing opponents 27-0 in his last three bouts. 
 
Series History
-Vs George Mason- Rider leads the all-time series 19-1. Rider has won each of the last 13 duals vs the Patriots including a 21-13 win last year in Virginia.
-Vs Cleveland St- Rider leads the all-time series 5-3. Rider has won 4 of the last 5 vs Cleveland State however fell last year in Ohio.
-Vs Drexel- Rider leads the all-time series 34-12. Rider has won each of the last eight home duals vs the Dragons however, fell last year at the DAK 23-17.
 
Scouting the Scene
George Mason
At 174 pounds, Mason's Logan Messer is ranked third in MAC rankings. As a freshman, he finished fourth in the 2022 MAC tournament. He had an impressive rookie campaign, finishing with a 27-9 record.
The Patriots opened the 2022-23 season with six place-winners at the Princeton Open. Malachi Duvall (184 pounds) earned a third-place finish, the highest finish by a Patriot. Tyler Kocak finished fourth. Sophomores Michael Rapuano and Logan Messer earned a fifth-place finishes. Freshman Markel Baker and sophomore Jonathan List each finished sixth.
Cleveland St
Marcus Robinson ranks No. 29 by intermat for the second straight week The senior is currently 15-3 overall and a perfect 9-0 in dual matches.
In the initial NCAA rankings, Dylan Layton was ranked No. 30 at 141-pounds and Marcus Robinson was ranked No. 33 at 157-pounds.
The Vikings are coming off four straight wins all against MAC opponents SIUe, George Mason, Kent State, and Bloomsburg.
Drexel 
The Dragons has dropped back-to-back duals vs Army and #24 Penn
Drexel will round out their duals Sunday as they take on American at 4 p.m.
No. 26 Brian Bonino picked up a slight upset vs the Quakers taking down No. 22 Maximus Hale at 184
No. 18 Mickey O'Malley fell in the latest intermat rankings after falling to #16 Nick Incontrera of Penn
 
Face of The Franchise 
- Laird also has not been beaten in duals this season with his lone loss coming at the Southern Scuffle
-Laird remains perfect 4-0 in MAC duals, with all three wins coming with extra team points by major decision or tech fall.
-Laird also ranks among the nation's best at 197 at #5 in the NCAA coaches polls and #6 in the Intermat Rankings
-Earlier this season Laird was able to take down the reigning National Champion Max Dean of Penn St
 
Broncs In The Rankings 
- #23 McKenzie Bell, #22 Quinn Kinner at 149, and #6 Ethan Laird at 197 (Intermat)
- The NCAA released the second coaches' ranking of the 2022-23 season and three Broncs were nationally ranked. #29 McKenzie Bell (141), #22 Quinn Kinner (149), and #5 Ethan Laird (197), all represent the Broncs in the national polls.
 
The Weekend
- Friday's matinee will be the faculty and staff recognition match. The Broncs invite all faculty and staff to Alumni Gym to kick off a busy weekend. 
- Before the final home match, Rider vs Drexel, the Broncs will honor seven seniors; Ethan Laird, Alec Bobchin, Bryan Miraglia, Corey Connolly, Wyatt McCarthy, Evan Vazquez and Jake Silverstein
- All Rider matches will be streamed live on ESPN+.
 
Bronc Notes
- The Broncs are coming off a tough season in 2022 in which injuries and redshirt seasons limited the team. Rider finished 8th at MAC Championships.
- Rider returns five NCAA Qualifiers, including two from last season.
- A three-time NCAA Qualifier, Ethan Laird returns following a redshirt season in 2021-22. He qualified for NCAA's at 197 in his true sophomore and junior years, before bumping to heavyweight for 2020-21. He'll wrestle at 197 this season.
- Richie Koehler is a two-time NCAA Qualifier, earning the honor in each of the last two seasons at 133.
- Quinn Kinner, who was an NCAA Qualifier at 141 in his first season at Rider last year, will bump up to 149 this season.
- 2021 NCAA Qualifiers McKenzie Bell and Jake Silverstein also return this season. Bell redshirted last year after going to NCAA's at 141 as a true freshman. Silverstein suffered through injuries last season after qualifying for NCAA's at 165 in 2021.
- John Hangey returns for his sixth season as Rider's Head Coach. The 2020 MAC Co-Coach of the Year has posted a 44-27  dual record with 19 of his wrestlers qualifying for NCAA's in his first six years.
- The Broncs finished 35th at NCAA's last season with 5.5 points.
