De Lange Competes at UWW Senior World Championships

De Lange becomes first Bronc to compete at UWW Senior World Championships

BELGRADE, Serbia - Rider University's Steyn De Lange competed on a global stage on September 18th as the Redshirt Freshmen represented South Africa at the United World Wrestling (UWW) Senior World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia in freestyle competition, becoming the first Bronc to compete at the global event.

De Lange competed in the 97kg bracket against defending Olympic Gold Medalist Abdulrashid Sadulaev of Russia. De Lange fell to the two-time Olympic Gold Medalist 7-0 by VPO, finishing 29th in the deep field of competition in Serbia.

"Steyn is a pioneer, he is our first International Student Athlete and the first ever wrestler in our program to compete in the Senior World Freestyle Championships.  He drew Sadulaev from Russia in the first round who is a 5x World Champ and a 2x Olympic Champ and considered by many to be the #1 pound for pound wrestler in the world" said Rider Head Coach John Hangey "Certainly a tough draw but Steyn wrestled well and represented South African and Rider University extremely well.  We are excited for his contributions to the program as he is just a redshirt freshman for us."

The Polokwane, South Africa native adds to his extensive resume in world competition. Last year, De Lange won a Silver medal in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Great Britain and a Bronze medal at the 2021 Junior World Championships. The two-time African Gold medalist prepares for his first season with the Broncs in 2023 expecting to see action at 197lbs.
