Volleyball Falls in Three Sets at Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, CT– The Rider University volleyball team struggles Saturday afternoon, falling in straight sets to Fairfield 25-20, 25-23, 25-15. The Broncs fall to 5-12 on the year, and are now 4-5 in MAAC play, while the Stags improve to 12-5 on the season, and 8-1 in league play.
 
In the opening set, Rider jumped out to a 4-0 lead, including an ace by Ryley Frye (New Hope, MN/Robbinsdale Armstrong[UTEP]). The Stags would respond, quickly tying the set at 7-7. With Rider leading 17-16, Fairfield scored five-straight points and took the opening set.
 
Neither side could gain a foothold in the second with both teams failing to rally more than three-consecutive points. Down 23-21, Tori Schrader (Grantville, PA/Lower Dauphin) got a kill, then an ace to tie the set 23-23, but Fairfield responded with two consecutive points to extend their lead in the match.
 
Fairfield carried the momentum into the third set, opening the set with an 11-0 run and the Broncs would never recover.

"After a decent start, we let Fairfield do whatever they wanted. We had no grit or intensity in any phase. Block and defense was non-existent and our offense was finding every block and defender on Fairfield. We can't let a team go for 50 kills in a three-set match. - Fairfield extends its lead in the all-time series to 42-5.
- For the seventh time this season, Frye and Makenna Mason (Hilton Head Island, SC/Hilton Head) reached double digit assists in the same match with 15 and 11 respectively.
- Keegan O'Connor (Weatherford, TX/Weatherford) had a team-high 13 digs, her 12th match this season in double digits.

- The Broncs hit .128 in the match, while the Stags hit .366.
- Rider had just 32 kills in the match to 50 for Fairfield.
- Fairfield had a 61-46 edge in digs.
- The Broncs had an 8-4 edge in aces.
- Schrader and Gabby Polynice (Huntington Beach, CA/Grant[Delaware State]) each had nine kills to lead the Broncs. Paige Giehtbrock (Clarkston, MI/Clarkston) added five.
- In addition to O'Connor, Frye had nine digs, and Giehtbrock added eight.
- Molly Strah (Akron, OH/Archbishop Hoban) had four aces in the match.
