LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider University Field Hockey team led early, and held on late to defeat Sacred Heart, 2-1, Friday night. The Broncs win their second-straight, improving to 6-7 on the season, and 3-1 in NEC play. The Pioneers are now 3-9 on the year, falling to 1-3 in conference games.
The Broncs opened the scoring less than two minutes into the game.
Valeria Perales (Madrid, Spain/IES Mirasierra) made the insert on the corner directly to
Willemijn Ephraim (Amsterdam, The Netherlands/Vossius Gymnasium). Ephraim then blasted a shot that made its way through traffic and into the back of the cage.
Late in the first half, The Broncs used a quick restart off a Saint Francis goal to get the ball to Ephraim at the top of the circle. Ephraim's shot was saved but the rebound found the stick of Perales, who converted into the vacated net for a crucial insurance goal.
Just over a minute into the second half, the Pioneers earned a corner. After the initial shot from the corner was saved, Sacred Heart was able to score the rebound, making it a one-goal game once again.
The Pioneers got their best chance to tie the game with just over three minutes remaining in the game. With the Broncs playing down a player, Sacred Heart earned a penalty corner, but
Carlee Fulton (West Chester, PA/West Chester East) made the save to preserve the Broncs' lead.
