Men's Soccer Unveils 2022 Schedule

Broncs rekindle local rivalries with Seton Hall, Rutgers and Princeton this season

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The 2022 Rider University men's soccer team will play three road non-conference games against high-major opponents in addition to home contests against regional opponents Penn and NJIT, Rider Head Coach Charlie Inverso has announced. The tough non-conference slate is in addition to an always-grueling MAAC slate. The Broncs open league play on Sept. 28 at home against Manhattan.


Seton Hall
Thursday, Aug. 25 * South Orange, NJ
 
Series History: Rider leads, 16-9-2
Last Meeting: Rider, 2-1 (Aug. 28, 2017; South Orange, NJ)
2021 Record: 6-8-3 (2-7-1 Big East)
2021 Postseason: N/A
Quickly: The Broncs and Pirates renew their series, which began in 1939. The Broncs own a 16-9-2 lead in the all-time series, including wins in each of the last three, yearly matches from 2015-17. Each of the three wins came by one-goal differentials, as did all of the last six, with Seton Hall taking one-goal wins in 2012 and 2013 after Rider won a 1-0 match in 2011. 


Virginia

Last Meeting: Virginia, 2-0 (Nov. 19, 2015; Charlottesville, VA)(NCAA Tournament First Round)
2021 Record: 6-9-3 (2-5-1 ACC)
2021 Postseason: ACC Tournament First Round
Quickly: Virginia has won the only two meetings between the two programs, both NCAA Tournament First Round meetings in 1998 and 2015.  


Penn

Last Meeting: Penn, 7-2 (Sept. 23, 2012; Princeton, NJ)
2021 Record: 7-6-3 (1-4-2 Ivy League)
2021 Postseason: N/A
Quickly: Rider and Penn have met just three times in the two programs' histories – a split in the 1981 and 1982 seasons, with each team winning on its home field, before the Quakers took a 7-2 decision at the 2012 Princeton Invitational. The Broncs won the inaugural meeting in 1981, before Penn evened the series the following year.   


Rutgers

Quickly: Rider and Rutgers will meet for the first time in 29 years. The series, which began in 1939, halted after 11-straight Scarlet Knights victories from 1983-93. 


Central Connecticut State

Last Meeting: Rider, 4-1 (Sept. 2, 2021; Lawrenceville, NJ)
2021 Record: 2-12-2 (2-5-2 NEC)
2021 Postseason: N/A
Quickly: The Broncs and Blue Devils met for the first time since 1993 last September, with the Broncs taking a 4-1 win on Ben Cohen Field. The prior four meetings came between 1989 and 1993, with CCSU taking a 2-1-1 edge.


NJIT

Last Meeting: Tie, 2-2 (Aug. 30, 2021; Newark, NJ)
2021 Record: 6-12-1 (3-5-0 America East)
2021 Postseason: America East Semifinals
Quickly: Rider and NJIT played to a 2-2 tie last Aug. 30 in Newark. All nine meetings have come since 2007 and only once has a team won consecutive games, the Broncs' victories in 2015 and 2016. 


Princeton

Last Meeting: Princeton, 2-1 (Sept. 11, 2019; Princeton, NJ)
2021 Record: 12-6 (7-0 Ivy League)
2021 Postseason: NCAA Tournament First Round
Quickly: Princeton has won the last four meetings in the Route 206 Derby, including a 2-1 win on Sept. 11, 2019, in Princeton. Rider's wins in the series came in 1991, 1997 and 2002. The series dates back to 1941.


Manhattan

Last Meeting: Manhattan, 2-0 (Nov. 3, 2021; Riverdale, NY)
2021 Record: 6-9-2 (4-5-1 MAAC)
2021 Postseason: MAAC Quarterfinals
Quickly: Manhattan defeated the Broncs, 2-0, in the 2021 regular-season finale to clinch the eighth, and final, MAAC Championship berth. The Jaspers went on to fall to top-seeded and eventual Champion Marist in the quarterfinals. Rider is 6-3-1 against Manhattan since Head Coach Charlie Inverso took over in 2011.   


Iona

Quickly: Rider has won the last three meetings with Iona and nine of the last 10 to surge ahead, 15-11-1, in the all-time series with the Gaels.


Fairfield

Quickly: Rider erased deficits in a pair of wins over the Stags on Ben Cohen Field last Fall, including a 2-1 double-overtime victory on Taner Bay's golden goal in the 109th minute in the MAAC Semifinals on Nov. 11. On Oct. 20, the Broncs scored four second-half goals to erase a 2-0 halftime deficit and defeat Fairfield, 4-3, in regulation.


Quinnipiac

Last Meeting: Rider, 4-2 (Oct. 6, 2021; Hamden, CT)
2021 Record: 9-8 (4-6 MAAC)
2021 Postseason: N/A
Quickly: The 2020-21 MAAC Regular Season Champion and 2021 MAAC preseason favorite Bobcats struggled to a 4-6 mark in league play last season and was left out of the eight-team MAAC Tournament field. Rider took a 4-2 road win in Hamden on Oct. 6 on the strength of two Zaki Alibou goals and three Sergio Aguinaga assists.


Niagara
Saturday, Oct. 15 * Niagara University, NY
 
Series History: Rider leads, 13-8-3
Last Meeting: Rider, 2-1 (Oct. 9, 2021; Lawrenceville, NJ)
2021 Record: 8-10 (6-4 MAAC)
2021 Postseason: MAAC Quarterfinals
Quickly: Niagara earned the No. 3 seed in the MAAC Championships with a 6-4 league mark, but fell to sixth-seeded Fairfield in the quarterfinals. The Broncs have won six of the last seven meetings with the Purple Eagles, including a 2-1 win last Oct. 9 on Ben Cohen Field. The Broncs trailed, 1-0, at the half, but Zaki Alibou equalized in the 54th minute and the Broncs took the victory on an own goal in the 84th.  


Mount St. Mary's

Series History: Mount St. Mary's leads, 6-4-0
Last Meeting: Mount St. Mary's, 2-1 (Sept. 4, 2011; Emmitsburg, MD)
2021 Record: 3-15 (1-8 NEC)
2021 Postseason: N/A
Quickly: The last time Rider played Mount St. Mary's was the third game in 12th-year Rider Head Coach Charlie Inverso's first season leading the Broncs in 2011. Again conference foes after joining the MAAC for the 2022-23 academic year, Rider's last win over Mount St. Mary's came when the two schools were Northeast Conference foes in 1996. Mount St. Mary's has won the last three non-conference pairings in 2003, 2010 and 2011.


Marist

Quickly: Marist took a 4-2 win in Poughkeepsie last Oct. 13, playing the final 67+ minutes up a man after Tyrrell Moore was red carded. A month later, in the MAAC Championship Game, Rider battled back from down two goals to play the Red Foxes to a 2-2 draw, but the Red Foxes advanced to the NCAA's on penalty kicks. Rider's last win over Marist came Sept. 29, 2018, in Poughkeepsie.


Siena

Quickly: After Siena dealt Rider a 2-0 defeat on Ben Cohen Field on Senior Day last Oct. 30, the Broncs drew even with a 1-0 win on Francisco Gomez Olano's goal in the fifth minute and Pablo Gatinois' program-record-breaking 16th career shutout in the MAAC Quarterfinals just eight days later in suburban Albany. 


Saint Peter's

Quickly: Rider played Saint Peter's to a wild 3-3 draw last Oct. 16 on Ben Cohen Field. The Peacocks scored in the 12th and 14th minutes to take a 2-0 lead, before Rider equalized with goals in the 40th and 51st minutes. Saint Peter's retook the lead 43 seconds later, also in the 51st minute, before Sergio Aguinaga equalized in the 57th minute.


Canisius
