ALBANY, NY –
Dimencio Vaughn (New York, NY/Callaway/The Masters School [Ole Miss]) scored a game-high 24 points and added eight rebounds and
Allen Powell (Philadelphia, PA/La Salle College HS) scored nine of his 18 points in the final 4:06 to ice a 74-60 Rider Men's Basketball win at Siena Friday night at MVP Arena. With the win, the Broncs' first at Siena since Dec. 7, 2012, Rider improves to 8-13 (4-7 MAAC), while the Saints dip to 9-9 (6-4 MAAC).
The first half was a one-possession game for the first 15 minutes before the Broncs went on a 15-3 run to take a 34-24 lead. The Broncs held Siena without a field goal for a span of nearly six minutes, before Colby Rogers hit a three at the halftime buzzer to cut the Broncs' lead to 34-27 at the half. Vaughn scored nine of his 10 points at the break during Rider's run.
Siena immediately whittled the Broncs' lead to four with the first three points of the second half and made it a four-point game three more times in the opening five minutes of the latter stanza. But a 9-0 Rider run pushed the advantage back to double-digits, 51-38.
Ajiri Ogemuno-Johnson (Delta State, Nigeria/Monsignor Bonner) sparked the run with a lay-up and added a hustle three-point play to make it a 10-point lead.
Jeremiah Pope (Clinton, NC/Clinton [Brunswick C.C.]) punctuated it with a right-corner triple.
The Saints twice cut the Rider lead to five, but could draw no closer. Powell converted on a drive at the 4:06 mark and followed with a steal and assist to
Sedrick Altman (Rialto, CA/Colony [Pepperdine]) on a fast break. After Rogers hit a jumper, Powell went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line and hit a three to push the lead back to 12. Vaughn made two free throws with 46 seconds remaining to push the lead to its largest point, the final 14-point margin.
Quotes & Notes
"It definitely felt good. We've struggled the last six times here. It's tough to win here. We've not had a lot of success here, as an assistant coach or the head coach, so this is definitely a great night for us and our team. They thought they did an unbelievable job."
"You should've seen these guys today. They were dialed in to the film session. They were dialed in to the walk through. To a man, each and every one of them were rooting for one another, coaching each other up. All the credit goes to these guys for putting in the work and putting up with me when I'm all over them."
